His background: Canadian-born Young joined GM in the late 1980s and made his career a world tour, typical of its execs on the rise. From '98 to '01, worked on several GM-Suzuki joint ventures in Japan.
His task: Burning through $1 billion per month, Young had been working on creative ways to beat bankruptcy.
Looking for cash: As E-Z credit dried up, GM last year put up Hummer and ACDelco for sale, and divested itself of its remaining three-percent interest in Suzuki.
